Department of Children & Family Services' Safe Haven Campaign Wins Bronze Telly Award

A public service campaign television spot produced by the Louisiana Department of Social Services (DSS) to spread awareness of Louisiana's Safe Haven law has been awarded a national bronze 2010 Telly Award, the premier award honoring outstanding local, regional, and cable TV commercials and programs.

DSS created a pair of commercials in 2009 to publicize Louisiana's Safe Haven law. The commercials reiterate that, through the Safe Haven law, parents who choose not to use an adoption agency and feel they cannot care for their newborn can relinquish the baby up to 31-days-old at any hospital, police or fire station with no questions asked. The bronze Telly Award winning television commercials are part of a larger campaign that includes media interviews, posters, brochures, a Web site (www.louisianasafehaven.com) and social media marketing, among others. More than 25 percent of the babies relinquished using the Safe Haven law since it went into effect in 2004 have occurred since the start of the campaign last year.

DSS worked with Louisiana-based Wish Picture Shows to produce the commercials, which aired throughout Louisiana in 2009.

Founded in 1978, the Telly Awards honor outstanding local, regional and cable television commercials and programs, video and film productions, and online film and video. Judges are from all regions of the United States and represent large and small organizations, including advertising agencies, television stations, production houses and corporate video departments.

The Telly Awards receives over 13,000 entries annually from all 50 states and countries around the world. The entries do not compete against one another; rather, they are judged against a high standard of merit. Fewer than one quarter of entries are awarded bronze Telly Awards. Past winners include NFL Films, PBS, ESPN, NBC Universal, The Weather Channel, Harpo Productions and Warner Bros.
